Last summer on Cape Cod, I ate my first lobster roll. Then proceeded to eat somewhere in the neighborhood of 7-43 additional lobster rolls. Most of them involved soggy Wonder Bread hot dog buns. But let’s be frank, anything involving lobster, bread and mayonnaise will inevitably be pretty tasty.
Last week I met one of my favorite food nerds in the East Village for lunch. It was a sunny day and we had to discuss beach menus, natural circumstances to warrant a trip to Luke’s Lobster [93 E. 7th St., NYC].
Don’t wait for special circumstances to hit up Luke’s. Huge chunks of fresh, sweet lobster in a light dressing served on a bun that maintains its crispy character through the last bite. Seventeen bucks with a trendy root beer and bag of chips. Summer is here, so slip into some Madras shorts and get down to business.
Did I mention that their East Village location is sandwiched between Caracas sit-down and Caracas take-out? With Porchetta across the street and Butter Lane Bakery on the same block…Jesus C! Makes me consider renting an apartment on the block, getting a couple cats and settling in to obesity.
Luke is fully aware that while hipsters and weird old hippies like lobster rolls, his true target market is Uptown. The little devil just opened a new location on the Upper East Side to better accomodate the Madras crowd(E. 81st and 2nd Ave.). The joint is probably already crawling with strollers and moms with popped collars, but…can you blame them?
If all this lobster roll talk is making you salivate, and your summer doesn’t involve a trip to the East Village or the East Coast, perhaps you can fly a prayer flag and hope that the McLobster makes comeback. This is not a joke…but a real McDonald’s menu item available temporarily in Canada. This commercial also appears to be made in Canada. (What?)
